Under 11 Soccer Progression 2: Advancing the Ball: Preparing the Ball: First Touch
Coach: Rich Badmington
In this series of free instructional videos for coaching youth soccer, LTRC Director of Coaching Rich Badmington demonstrates several activities, drills and fundamentals for the U 11 player. Here are six tools to enable players to maintain possession and advance the ball. 1. 1st touch: preparing the ball...rather than "trapping" it. 2. Come back for the ball and turn. 3. Shielding, spin turn. 4. Playing to space..not to feet 5. Changing fields 6. Overlapping runs. The building blocks of soccer can be grouped into a series of three basic “progressions,” meaning three, progressively more challenging teaching sequences of related ideas. A fourth progression is offered for Goalkeepers. These are sequences within which ideas are built, from simple to complex; a growing accumulation of information. One idea relates to and serves as a foundation for the next. The teaching of pure technique (the way the body plays the ball) must happen within these activities – not as a preliminary, isolated, static exercise.
